The Law Centre offers a specialist service in benefits law. The Welfare Benefits Unit advises and assists you to understand the complex process of claiming welfare benefits and also ensuring that you claim what is rightfully yours.
If a decision goes against you we can help you challenge that. We can represent you at an Appeal Tribunal. If you are not successful at the Appeal Tribunal we also specialise in representing cases to the next level before a Social Security Commissioner, and where necessary higher appeal courts.
Apart from representation we also take on many complex cases referred to us by other agencies such as the Citizens Advice Bureau, Elders First and local solicitors’ firms. We can advise and represent on all social security law, including entitlement to all benefits, backdating, suspensions and overpayments. We represent at hundreds of appeals each year covering disability living allowance, attendance allowance, incapacity for work and all other benefits.
We offer initial advice through our drop in session and we provide advice about some of the following issues that arise:
- I have received a letter saying my benefit has stopped - what can I do?
- I have been asked to attend a medical by the DWP - what advice can you give?
- I have been told I am fit to work - What can I do?
- I have been told I have been paid too much benefit in the past. Do I have to pay it back?
- My application for Disability Living Allowance has been refused. How can I challenge this?
- My daughter has asthma is there any financial help I can get?
- The bailiffs have wrote to me and said they are coming to remove my household goods - can they do this?
